Althorp Estate
Northamptonshire
Northamptonshire
Completed 2011
GQA were employed to comprehensively restore the exterior of the house including refixing the loose mathematical tiles, conserving and repairing the stonework, recovering all the lead roofs, as well as repairing and reinforcing the dining room ceiling and creating two secret concealed bathrooms in the state bedrooms.
GQA was previously responsible for the design and master planning of the Althorp Estate to accommodate the Princess Diana Memorial Museum. Not only did it involve the restoration and conversion of the Grade II* Stables, but also significant alterations to the historic landscape to accommodate visitors to the Garden to view “the Island Mausoleum”. The 18th Century Corinthian Temple, the Brew House and other garden buildings were repaired and restored as part of the development and visitor experience. The Estate had to be carefully designed to accommodate 30,000 visitors per month.
Our work received the RICS “Project of the Year” Award in 2012.
