BIOGRAPHY
Giles Quarme is a renowned conservation architect with over 30 years’ experience working with a wide range of historic buildings. The nature of his work ranges from specialist repairs and conservation, to major interventions, adaptive reuse and consultation. Since founding Giles Quarme & Associates in 1987, now Giles Quarme Architects Ltd, he has been responsible for many notable conservation projects across the UK and internationally.
For over twelve years Giles was Surveyor to the Fabric of the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, overseeing its transition from a military college to a major mixed-use complex of educational facilities, museums and events spaces at the heart of a World Heritage Site. Presently Giles is Chairman of Historic Buildings & Places formally known as the Ancient Monuments Society.
Giles was responsible for a series of projects at Althorp House, the ancestral home of Diana, Princess of Wales and led the transformation of the 18th century stables into a museum about Diana’s life, and subsequently a major series of fabric repairs to the house itself, which won several prestigious awards. Giles has worked on a number of schemes with HLF and other grant funding. He has also completed projects or advised national governments on historic buildings in Romania, Sri Lanka, Brazil and elsewhere. He regularly acts as an Expert Witness in planning cases involving historic buildings, and acted as a consultant on a number of complex planning submissions across London.
Giles’ approach to conservation is pragmatic and informed, rather than dogmatic and fixed, responding to a building’s needs and a client’s requirements.Giles is currently leading architectural projects across the UK, ranging from Grade I and Grade II* Listed townhouses in Central London, to listed country estates, and manor houses, along with leading the much-needed conservation and repair works at the Museum of Immigration in Spitalfields London.
