GQA were responsible for the restoration of the Grade I listed 16th century castle. The Castle had been the subject of insensitive and inappropriate alterations and neglect over many years. It was thus fortunate that the new owners recognised their responsibilities to repair and maintain the castle when they acquired the Estate.
The Castle had been last restored by Herbert Baker at the beginning of the 20th Century. The Castle now combines 21st Century amenities in a traditional setting; including the derelict, and unused for 50 years, marble swimming pool designed by Sir Herbert Baker and based on the Baths of Caracalla. The interior was comprehensively restored, including provision of 15 new bathrooms. GQA worked closely with Christopher Gibbs, the famous interior designer.
“The terraces, parkland and lake provide the perfect setting for the house, which stands like a jewelled casket on a rise, looking over the ineffably beautiful Stour Valley. It remains an early 17th-century statement of confidence, given vigorous new life in the early 21st century.” (Country Life Magazine, 2006)
